If all days looked bright and fair
With no clouds in the sky,
If we could see no gloomy days
Our torrents sweeping by,
This splendid earth would soon become
A dry and dusty plain,
The grass and trees would cease to grow,
For life springs up with rain.
If every path we take were smooth,
And all our dreams came true,
We’d find no need to seek God’s hand,
To guide us safely through.
I’m glad for ll the stormy nights,
For peace I’ve sought in vain,
These trials draw me close to God,
For faith matures with pain.
